Sorry for the not-so-clever football reference.
I'm talking about 4 semesters down, 1 to go! I finished my final assignment last night and can forget about school for a solid 6 or so weeks. I'm one 6 credit semester away from my masters degree and can. not. wait. As much as I'd like to say that I will be able to forget about school forever, I can't shake the feeling that I may end up back there somehow to learn a new trade that fits in a little better with the family-friendly work schedule I would like to have. But, then again...if I go back to school that would probably mean we'd have to put off the family thing even longer. So we'll see I guess.
There I go jumping back on the Debbie Downer train again. I can't seem to stop doing that. No matter how many things I am happy or excited about, I manage find twice as many things to bring me down. I don't know what my problem is.
Tonight we are going to Corey's company Christmas party. We had a lot of fun last year and are doing the same thing this time. It was a dinner/booze cruise on Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee River. The food was good and the view was amazing. I'm hoping that the boat will make fewer attempts to break through the frozen over parts of the water. I'm not in the mood for any Titanic moments. After the dinner cruise last year we ended up bar hopping on Water Street, but the people we were with live closer to Madison and still had to drive home. This year we live closer to downtown and have invited people to stay over if they need to. Anyway, I'm off to clean the house a little more just in case.

Nothing turns strangers into friends quite like alcohol
...and the internet, but that doesn't apply in this case.
Last night we went to Corey's company Christmas party - a dinner cruise along the Milwaukee River and along the shoreline of Lake Michigan - and had a damn good time. I finally got the chance to meet his co-workers and their wives so it was nice to put faces to the names I always hear.
In the winter the boat leaves from the Rip Tide Bar & Grill so the whole group met there and got started on some drinks before leaving. The plank we walked down from the restaurant to the boat was a steep, slippery, death trap but somehow we made it on ok. I have no idea how long our cruise was, but the food was great, the drinks were free, and the views were beautiful.
Since much of the Milwaukee River is frozen and parts of the lake are icy, many Titanic jokes were made. The first time we started cruising through ice was in the harbor around the summerfest grounds and Discovery World. At first we were all wondering what that awful noise was, but then we looked out the window. Corey and one of his co-workers went outside to check it out and apparently we were breaking through a 2 inch sheet of ice. This happened again a little later on our way up the river.
After the cruise, a bunch of us stuck around the Rip Tide for more drinks and to listen to the live music (and by "live music" I'm referring to one little older guy with a guitar and a microphone...) which was fun. The guy performing kept getting people in the bar involved by handing them other weird instruments to play along with him. This is the part where Corey played the cowbell [insert funny Will Ferrell mental images here]. He didn't have a lot of rhythm but he had a damn good time doing it. His co-workers also played the washboard, the tambourine, moracas (sp?) and a lizard...whatever that was.
The Rip Tide closed pretty early, but Corey and I and another couple were no where near ready to turn in so we went up Water Street a ways to some place that there is no way I will remember what it was called, and after that we went around the corner to some other place called McGillycuddy's for more drinking and to play some pool. We finally called it a night around what was most likely 2 am.
Why yes...of course I took pictures!

Paranoia, Paranoia Everybody's Coming To Get Me
Corey and I haven't gone out alone together since...well...sometime before we moved to Wisconsin. For those of you keeping track, that was in June. Now, I know after you've had some kids or been married forever date night tends to become a rarely occurring thing of the past. Well damn it, we have no kids and we aren't married yet (I'd gladly wake up tomorrow married and pregnant if I could, just so ya know).
I had big ideas of heading somewhere fun downtown, but by the time I got home from work all I wanted to do was take a nap. Since I was tired, and Corey isn't a big "try-er of new things", we headed to Outback Steakhouse down the road in Fox Point. By the time I got there I wasn't tired anymore and decided it was time to drink. It's been so long since I've been there that I forgot how good their drinks are and how I could easily go there just to drink. I had a pomegranite-pear martini which was delicious, and with my dinner I had some kind of mango sangria concoction. I highly recommend either one. I also felt the need to treat myself to my favorite food on this earth - Lobster!
Melissa, if you're reading this - I miss our lobster outings :) Here is the picture I took with my phone and tried to send you...

After dinner we went over to the Borders bookstore that is across the parking lot. There was live music which was kind of cool. It looked kind of like old-folks night at the bookstore, but there's nothing wrong with that! I got myself a cafe americano (in honor of my dad) to wander around with (just like my dad always does), and headed towards the books. While Corey was off finding a bathroom, a very deep-voiced, goth-dressed black man in sunglasses (indoors...at night) got very curious about my necklace. He apparently needed to touch it. Our conversation went like this:
Him: "That is a very beautiful necklace." (you have to say this to yourself in the deepest, slowest, almost creepy voice possible)
Me: "Thank you"
Him: "May I see it?"
Me: "Ummmm...sure?"
Him: (reaches out and holds and RUBS my necklace) "Hmmm...yes, yes that is very nice. It must be... [pause] ...amber? Or...[pause]...perhaps...[pause]...tiger eye?"
Me: "Yeah...it's tiger's eye." (wondering if he is going to let go of my necklace)
Him: "Well it's a beautiful necklace. Thank you for showing it to me."
Me: "You're welcome."
Weird, no? Keep in mind he had me by a very short string around my neck, and I have issues with strangers getting into my "bubble". And I was slightly buzzed.
Anyway, as we were heading home to watch movies I had the sudden urge to hear the song Flagpole Sitta by Harvey Danger, so I called the radio station and they put it on for me. It's been stuck in my head ever since (hence the title of this blog - it's lyrics to the song). Yes, I am a radio-station caller. I do it all the time. Sometimes I even win stuff! Not since I moved here though.
We watched the Quentin Tarantino movie "Grindhouse." Whoaholyweirdnessandgore - but if it wasn't graphic it wouldn't be Tarantino. It was weird and full of random just like the rest of his movies, so I wasn't disappointed - but nothing will ever beat Pulp Fiction.
The rest of the night is none of your business ;)
