Baby, it's cold outside...
So...the thermostat is set at 60 (I even had to argue to get it there and 60 isn't even that cold) we are piled under large piles of grandma's quilts. It's not all that bad really, except the part where my feet are always freezing. The rest is fine.
I need to remind you that I'm not the one who grew up in Wisconsin, but I seem to be 100x more acclimated. I even sleep in a tank top and shorts with no socks on while my husband the human oven is wrapped up in socks and long johns. Even the cat has to be under all of the blankets.
Anyway, I started this post with a purpose. I think.
OH YEAH. I wanted to brag. School was cancelled tomorrow because of the cold which gives me an un-needed but VERY welcomed day off from work. I'm glad because it was going to be a late night of wrestling and swimming. It's not that those things are difficult, it's just that I'd rather be lazy.
So what will I do with my time off? I might shower. I will probably blog about our vacation finally. Maybe get caught up on the DVR. It will be a fabulous day.
So for the rest of you who are reading but aren't experiencing our weather or *THINK* it is cold where you are (hi Karon!), try this one out and get back to me (and cross your fingers and pray for those without homes and for those pets with completely stupid and irresponsible owners):

Is it almost fall again?
1) I FINALLY appreciate summer weather again. It's been a long time, summer. I'm glad we've reconciled. It's so much easier to love you when you aren't all up in my face 24/7.
2) We did not take full advantage of this summer, and now it's pretty much gone - at least for me. Shit. Granted, there was grad school and that whole wedding thing that I did devote a WHOLE LOT of time (and money) to but still. We could have done a little more, couldn't we? Oh well. Next summer it is.

My new hobby-to-be
I work in a profession that keeps me continuously surrounded by healthy, active, and athletic people - yet I am not one. Not anymore anyway.
Against all the odds (young parents who weren't involved in sports in any way shape or form), I was a VERY athletic child and that lasted all the way through high school and into the army. My big sports were volleyball, skiing, and softball, and every once in awhile I'd take a break from one of those (or add more to whatever I was doing already) and at some point also played water polo, basketball, track & field (shotput, discus, and javelin) and I'm sure I'm missing one. At one point in the army I was on 3 different teams at once and still doing our morning PT every day at 6:30.
Anyway, then came college and the overwhelming desire to rest whenever I had the chance. I can't imagine why.
Now...I need to do something. To start something and be involved with something that is good for me and relieves stress instead of piling on more than I already have. A goal.
Unfortunately I am in a profession where in most settings, the hours are usually sporadic, completely unpredictable, and usually long.
I could join a gym. Going to the gym to just "work out" is something I dread. It's boring. The scenery never changes. I never feel good really after going to the gym. And I certainly don't want to pay for it (or the gas to get there).
I could join a local recreational sports league, like the 30+ soccer team a friend of mine was encouraging me to join with her (she plays all the time). This is right up my alley! I would love this! Ah...but no. I can't commit to any one or two nights of the week on a regular basis. I might have Tuesday (or any other) night free one week, work it the next, and have it off for 3 more, and then work 6 straight. So, while it might be ok for me to just show up when I can, I am not ok with a team of people not being able to count on me to show up to something. So that's out.
What's left?
Running.
I have never been a good runner, or a general fan of it really (probably because I'm so slow)...but after 5 years in the army of runnining anywhere from 2-10 miles a day 4-5 days a week, I know I am capable. I know I love running through the woods or through parks around airfields, rain or shine. And I felt great afterwards. Refreshed. Especially if I pushed myself hard enough to keep the rest of the slow chicks motivated. I can run anywhere. Almost any time. My refreshed, newly-non-smoking heart could use the work, and this extra 30 lbs of lazy bullshit I'm packing around could really use a genuine hint that it's not welcome on this ass and gut anymore. And now I live in a pretty tree-lined neighborhood just asking for me to explore it, make friends with it, and love it.
I don't need a certain day of the week. I don't need a membership. I can be outdoors. And better yet, I can still nurture my competitive side.
With myself.
And of course, these:
They are Nike's. They have what I need for the mechanics of my foot, they were comfortable, and they were on clearance. The next pair will be much sweeter, I assure you. For now, I'm entitled to my starter running shoes...kinda in the way people are allowed a starter marriage. Or 2.
Do people name shoes like they name bikes? If so I might have to call them Scooby & Scrappy....but probably not.
In other news...
Smiley, happy babies are the most adorable summer job ever:
We had a damn good time today. Here he was really enjoying my Lil' Jon impressions.
My to-do list has been butchered down to 49 items. Wish me luck on knocking a few more off tomorrow!

I love Milwaukee
Today as I was driving down THE 43 (Hi Jess!) on my way to a baby shower and I looked to my left towards the city and the Hoan Bridge and the lake and got this weird, almost overwhelming feeling of giddyness and love for my new home city. I belong here.
How's that for some sappy cheesiness?
Also, Happy 23rd Anniversary to my mom and step-dad!

First full day of spring, my ass!
Yesterday it was sunny and warm (by our current standards) and most of the snow was gone except for where it was piled up from the plow. Today, we get a foot of snow.
In other randomness...
I'm rocking my NCAA basketball brackets, which is funny because I don't like basketball. Well, I didn't anyway. Now I am more than happy to have it on all day long so I can cheer for my picks. Why the sudden change? I'm taking part in fundraiser for National Athletic Training Month. The winner of the bracket pool thingamawhateveryoucallit gets the money donated to the athletic training program of their choice. Mine, of course, would go to Fresno State (much to the dismay of my fellow participants in this). I miss those bastards. As an AT, it is illegal to personally profit from any type of betting etc., but from what I understand, we can donate to any organization. I'm glad I wasn't the one in charge of figuring these rules and loopholes out.
In other news, I'm back to the beginning with wedding dress shopping. I'm not happy about it. Neither of my dresses (I have two) fit me properly. One I gained too much weight for. The other is not flattering. At all. I have no idea what I want, other than to not look like a puffy white marshmallow cow on our wedding day.
I'm really looking forward to going to Madison on Tuesday morning and spending the night at a friend's house for some quality chick-time. We're going to eat, drink, and play Wii. Maybe we'll do each other's hair and talk about boys and have a pillow fight. At some point I might even go try on a few dresses,
I also have this crappy prospectus to write for my crappy "non-thesis" grad school option. I use the term non-thesis loosely, because in my eyes, it's still pretty much a freaking thesis. Maybe at some point during this spring break (only from work - not school) I'll sit down and find the articles I should have looked for a week ago. Maybe.

Contact!
The VA finally called me back - to tell me that they will call me back. Apparently my doc is not there very often and they are waiting for the doctor to make a decision on what to do next since my sleep study was normal. WHAT?!?! Normal?
- Shouldn't I be involved in my medical decisions? Guess not.
- What is it about 3 minutes of REM sleep in a night that is normal? Someone please enlighten me.
Then, apparently, she will call me to set up an appointment. Good thing I already have one scheduled. For May. Grr.
In other news...
I got my winter back - just in time to drive through the country on the way home from work. The snow was coming down so hard that I really didn't have much of an idea what was in front of me or where I was going. I love the snow - hate driving in it. The roads out there were slick so of course I had another moment where I thought for sure I was a goner. At least it wasn't across 3 lanes of traffic this time.
Anyway, after dinner Corey and I decided go outside and build the biggest snowman we could possibly maneuver since the snow was so sticky. We dug out some pieces to old Halloween costumes, so he looks like a big pirate polar-bear sort of thing.
He's got a pirate wig, a pirate hat, vampire teeth, rocks for eyes and nose, and a scarf that is too small for him.

The deathcicle
I've found an enticing replacement in the murder weapons of nature growing off of the roof outside our balcony. I have a vision of myself dropping something off my balcony and having to go underneath it to retrieve it - right as the deathcicle decides to break off and stab me through the back as I bend over to pick up whatever I dropped.
The first one was about 3 feet long a few days ago:
But then that one broke off and was replaced by this thicker, meaner one overnight:
That was late in the morning yesterday...now it is close to a full 6 feet long:
I really hope it keeps growing and doesn't break off. I have a thing for icicles and think they are pretty...even if I think they might kill me. When I was a kid in Oregon I used to love picking them off and throwing them at my cousins, but they were nothing like these. Wisconsin icicles are icicles on 'roids.
I'm looking forward to having a whole wall of them soon :) :

My first snow day
The school that I work for is closed, and no school = no athletic training coverage! There really couldn't have been better timing for me for this, since our final exam is available to start today at noon, which is right now. Instead of driving out in the snow and working a late night at the school, I can sit here in my sweats, watch it snow, and take my final. I'll post some pictures of it (later) that I took this morning for you west-coasters :) I also took my cat out and dropped her in the middle of it - she wasn't a fan. It's really coming down and I LOVE it as long as I don't have to drive in it again.
I hope Corey's work lets him out a little early.

Dear Wisconsin Drivers,
Please learn the concept of "right of way". It's a 4-way stop, not rocket science. You can learn this on page 22 of the Wisconsin Motorist's Handbook. After you figure that one out, please learn about turning off your effing brights. It's on page 31.
Thanks in advance,
J.
PS. Dear Mr. Dude who almost ran me off the 2 lane road in the country on my way to work a couple of days ago - you're a douchebag. GFY.

I officially live in Wisconsin
Since the DMV pretty much determines if you are a resident of a state or not, I finally made the voyage there today. It was the same lovely experience it is in every other state. Anyway, almost 2 hours and too much money later, I walked out with my shiny new Wisconsin plates and can expect my new driver's license in the mail in the next week or 2. Since I expected my picture to suck, I went ahead and knocked a pound (or 10) off of my weight. Is that wrong? :)
Oh! I almost forgot!
The dress I was in love with popped up on ebay again and I won it! Some yatch (or maybe 2) tried to keep outbidding me at the end, but it's mine...all mine :) Now hopefully it fits.
This is what it looks like:

Apples, art, wine, & football!
I finally got my full weekend for the first time since sometime in August, so this weekend Corey and I headed to Madison (technically it's Monona, but anyway...) to get out of the house and go visit his family. We hadn't been there in over a month, so it was great to see everyone and to be able to just have two straight days of relaxation. Corey's grandma was also in town, and we hadn't seen her since Linda and Andre's wedding.
Some highlights of the weekend....
Saturday morning I went and got 7 inches of my hair cut off! I've been pondering it for awhile, so I finally got the guts to go do it. It turned out great and I love it. She didn't do as many layers at the front of my hair like in the picture I showed her, but that is because she advised me against making too much of a change at once. It made sense, so I went with it. Hindsight, I wish I would have told her to just go for it, but I will next time. Here is a picture, for those who haven't seen it already.
Earlier Saturday afternoon, Linda, Grandma, and I headed to Fitchburg to a pumpkin patch/apple orchard called Epelgaarden Farm (I think). It was really pretty out there, and I took a few pictures that I will attach to the bottom of this post. We went and wandered around the orchards, snagged a few apples off the trees (since no one was around) and at them. They were damn tasty. Before calling me an apple thief, you should know that Linda and Grandma did it first. Then we went and scoped out the pumpkin patch, which was picked pretty bare. What was left wasn't in the best shape, but all the pumpkins looked good from a distance. We left the farm with armloads of apples (paid for), 2 pumpkins, caramel dip, two jugs of cider, and 3 different kinds of jelly and went home and immediately started eating a little bit of everything. Now that I think about it, I feel like we ate all day every day all weekend long.
Later that night I headed to downtown Madison with Linda, Andre, Grandma, and the dogs to a small art show that featured some art by Andre's mom and brother. Andre is also an artist and is featured in an awesome article in the October issue of Brava magazine. If you want to check out some of his art (which is awesome, by the way) go check out www.livingmuseum.com. There was some pretty cool stuff at the show - the Ferrella's are a talented bunch. Even more interesting at the show were some of the people...one guy was up in another room doing drawings and knows Andre so we went up to say hi. This guy was a character that I couldn't even begin to describe. He reminded me a lot of Johnny Fever from the old tv show WKRP in Cincinatti. He also ripped a massive fart and exclaimed "Whooopsie!" Yeah.
Even later Saturday night, we all sat around and played Trivial Pursuit on the playstation 2, and I dipped into a couple of the many bottles of wine in the house. I almost drank too much of it - but not too much to lose at Trivia Pursuit! Or maybe it is that I drank enough to win TP...we may never know.
Sunday we obviously watched the Packers/Redskins game - some really blind refs in this one, but the cardiac Pack still won in the end. 5-1!!! Not too shabby! This victory over the Redskins was particularly sweet because Sunday morning I woke up to a text message from XH1 bragging about how "my boys" better be ready for an ass whoopin. Yeah, right.
(I guess I should mention here that XH1 and I are not exactly buddies or anything, but we don't hate each other either. It's a pretty neutral territory - hell...we got married (and divorced) really young and stupid. I'm over it, so is he. That said - my family can't stand him. At all. )
Anyway...Sunday morning I also colored my hair. Bad idea. I am smart enough to not use permanent haircolor or highlights on myself, but still too dumb to remember that anything with "golden" is not remotely flattering on me. Thank God it will be gone in 28-ish days. Hopefully by then I can get it done with the good stuff by a pro. If not, I will at least be smarter with my color choices.
Anyway, it's late, and I'm sleepy. I'm also frustrated as hell with grad school and my job, but that is another story for another day. Here are some pictures instead :)

Fall is my favorite season. Now where the hell is it?
Sure, the colors are beautiful and when I look at trees (and take pictures of them like a weirdo) from my livingroom window or from inside the comfort of my air conditioned car, it looks like fall. Then I step outside and my dreams of a cold, crisp, breeze are shattered. Why oh why oh WHY has it been so freaking hot out?
For the couple of you who were into my tree pictures, here are the latest ones added to the "series":

He's just so sexy.
Brett Favre? Hell yes. There is no better looking famous man. Sweaty, unshaven, and graying hair...Clooney's got nothing on Favre.
He broke Dan Marino's touchdown pass record today, furthering his status as a god among mere mortals.
Did I mention that the Packers are now 4-0?!?!?

Purrrty Lake Michigan
I forgot to post this the other day when I took it, and thought I'd share. The water was a beautiful shade of blue and there were all kinds of sailboats out there, just not in this picture.
I've been quiet this week because I've been working at a soccer camp (yay for getting paid!), and been doing a lot of pondering the wedding/reception situation. I've also spent an excessive amount of time researching (or attempting to) the different types of Lutherans. Why does there have to be so many denominations (Lutheran, Presbyterian, Baptist, etc) and then different types of those? I'm positive that I'm just overcomplicating it. We're meeting with the pastor at the church we went to last week on Monday night - I'm sure things will be much less complicated after that because I have a bunch of questions for him, and some thoughts of my own that I won't budge on, so I guess we'll see.
Anyway, I'm off to take a shower and email some very helpful knotties that can help me with my questions about the South Shore Park Pavillion.

Cows, cake, chapels, and bocce, oh my!
I'm back from another relaxing weekend in Madison :)
We left thursday night for Madison to go visit with Corey's family and also to have a small get-together for Corey's grandma's birthday and came home last night. On our way there on thursday night, we stopped in Delafield and drove over to St. John's Northwestern Military Academy to check out the outside of the chapel because we are considering having our wedding there. It is so beautiful and it's right across the street from a repelling tower and a bunch of other military stuff - how appropriate is that? For those of you who don't know, Corey and I were both in the army, and that is where we met. I took a few pictures of the outside, and I have an appointment to meet the chaplain at 3:00 tomorrow afternoon and also to check out the inside. I'm sure I will be taking more pictures. The chapel and the chaplain have had great reviews on theknot.com, so I'm very excited for tomorrow! Here are some of the pics:
The front - I love that red door.
The side/front
A little sunken courtyard-type thing on the side
Friday morning we drove up to Camp Douglas to pick up Corey's grandma - I love it up at her house! It's so peaceful. Corey also got a chance to go bond with his boat that he absolutely can NOT wait to fix and bring home! Honestly I can't wait either - it's going to be great! It still needs a new in-board motor and probably a new carpet and some paint, but otherwise it looks good.
Corey checkin' things out
Looking for something to MacGuyver the tarp down
Some of my fabulous farm photography:
I heart cows.
Corey and his grandma lookin out at the cows
Saturday night a few of Linda and Andre's friends came over for the get-together and we tried desperately to eat all the food Linda made but we were all stuffed pretty fast. It was soooooo good! There were a few different salads, barbecued salmon, barbecued shrimp (my FAVORITE - I couldn't get enough!), margaritas, beer, wine...mmmmm. Oh yeah, and CAKE! Linda made a white birthday cake with I don't know how many layers with raspberry in between, whipped cream frosting, and fresh raspberries on top...delicious!
I also learned how to play bocce, which I had never even heard of until a couple weeks ago! Andre and I had a pretty good lead, but then our opponents got a better hang of it and killed us 21-13. It's a fun game and can seriously be played by ALL ages! I recommend it :)
A great picture of Corey and his grandma
Sunday we took his grandma back to Camp Douglas and visited for awhile before heading back to Madison to pick up our stuff (and Linda's old dining room table) to head back home to Milwaukee. The ride back home flew by - I was actually able to read in the car without getting sick! Thanks to that, I will be finished with my 900 page book tonight!
Corey started his new job today, but they didn't really do much. He did come home with his company cell phone, laptop, name badge and a whole bunch of manuals to read that he doesn't seem too happy about though. I'm sure he'll be much happier when he actually gets to go out and do his job.
My day was fairly uneventful...it was raining this morning so I decided against running - I will be repeating week 2 of Couch to 5k this week...the insomnia caught up with me way too much last week to have any motivation to run. On a happier note, I actually slept last night without any type of sleepy drug - so tonight I'm going for 2 in a row and crossing my fingers that there will be no more of that insomnia business. It really sucks.

THE Test and Polish Fest
I meant to write about Polish Fest on Sunday...but then the reality of "oh crap, my NATABOC exam is in 3 days" set in and so the Polish Fest blog never happened. I apologize because this blog won't be NEARLY as good as it would if it was still fresh! :)On that note, I will start with the exam and go back to Polish Fest.
Yesterday morning I woke up, took a shower, and got in my car alone to drive to Green Bay to take a test that the future of my career as an athletic trainer depends on. Yes, if I fail I can retake it, however I need to pass THIS particular test because if I don't, I don't get to keep my sweet grad school tuition-covering position at the high school through the PT clinic. I'll still be a graduate assistant, I'd just be working at Concordia and paying for grad school myself. Who wants to do THAT? No pressure here.
So anyway...the drive to Green Bay was beautiful and a little relaxing until I saw how close I was getting to my destination. I get nervous sometimes - everyone does - however I've never been the "physically" nervous type. You know, the one that shakes or throws up or whatever else where the signs of anxiety are actually visible. Well...for once I was that person. I don't like it. I really thought I was going to throw up at various points for the rest of my trip - I even pulled over, but no. The stronger side of me was putting up one hell of a fight!
I got there, got my picture taken, showed them my drivers license, proving I was me, and was led in to a video/mic monitored room with four computers. Three of the computers were already taken by people taking the same exam as me that got an early start. We were given 4 hours to complete the test - I took 2. Last one in, first one out. I felt like I was going slow but apparently not! This month is the first time the test has been given completely computerized and let me say that I thought I would prefer that, but no way. I would MUCH rather have taken it on real people and with the old format. This was 125 multiple choice questions and 4 VERY weird hybrid problems, and then out of the blue it was over.
Taking this test left me with the strangest, most indescribable BLANK feeling that I've never felt before. I didn't feel like I did bad. I didn't feel like I did well. I didn't feel anything. It wasn't hard. It wasn't easy. It just "was". When the screen popped up basically saying "ok, that's it" I really didn't have one thought in my head. I just stared at the screen. My next thought was "What the hell just happened?" I'm convinced that this test was set up to screw with your mind. The BOC (board of certication) is now known to me as "The Man." The Man is always trying to bring you down, haha.
Anyway, it's over. If I passed, I will never have to take it again and will have the credential of ATC after my name. If I failed, I may have to sell my soul to the devil to come up with $235 dollars to take it again. I should find out within the next couple weeks. Pass or fail, I will be screaming it from the rooftops!
Polish Fest
Now for the good stuff!
Polish Fest was last weekend at the festival grounds on the lakefront in Milwaukee so we decided to go down there and check it out. Milwaukee is full of fests and other stuff to do throughout the entire summer! Summerfest is apparently the world's largest music festival and it just started today, then in a few weeks there will be German Fest so we'll be checking those out too!
As we were walking from the car to the fest, a van pulled up and yelled to us to ask if we were going the fest. We, obviously said yes and the lady thrusts her arm out with two tickets and says "Here! Have two tickets!!" A great start to the day...there sure are some nice people in this town! I don't hear of things like that happening in California.
The entrance to Polish Fest!
The Polka Police - they'd start polka dancing with you as soon as you walked in the gate! We managed to make it through un-polka'd :)
Some traditional polish dancing on the cultural stage.
Non-stop polka stage = NON STOP FUN!!! Seriously though - the polka looks like so much fun. As a matter of fact, later on we were at the next stage over where they started playing regular music and there weren't very many people over there so we were thinking things were calming down at Polish Fest...boy were we wrong. We headed over to the non-stop polka stage and it was a full dance floor and pretty much standing room only!
Got to see some of a Polka competition. Don't let her outfit fool you - they were good - but there was a father/teenage daughter pair that was absolutely amazing! This couple didn't even place...unfortunately other than the winners their other competition was a mom and her 3 year old and a mom and her 5 year old. Of course everyone applauded louder for them!
More like authentic DEATH IN A GLASS!
That's the Krupnik on the right. Ya know, it probably would have been good mixed with Sprite or 7-up or something...but no...apparently it's not served that way. That's what I get for trying something new!
My handsome man :)
Here I am workin on the Krupnik. I was determined to finish it since I spent Corey's money on it. Small sips were KEY...but it still gave me a kickin' buzz.
Oh look! Corey tried the Krupnik!
These are all pics from the fireworks show -it was pretty good!
That's it for Polish Fest. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! I think Corey has had 2 interviews a day this week - he's got two more in the morning! I don't think any of these pay quite as well as the big one he's going for, but some money is better than no money. The original job at Cellnet is still up in the air. Apparently they are still interviewing and should know something after the 4th.
As for me...well...my hunt for part time work officially starts tomorrow. We don't have the money for me to be waiting to see if the PT clinic finds something for me to do part time. I worked at a Varsity/JV baseball game tonight though and I hate to say it, but wearing khaki pants and a polo shirt makes me feel normal. I didn't realize it, but I don't think I've been feeling "normal" since graduation. I think I actually took a little comfort with toting around an AED and a kit full of tape and first aid stuff. Odd.
I think we're going to go visit some of the family in Madison this weekend, so it will be nice to go visit and get out of the house for awhile!
